The English golfer Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from around eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against Fleetwood.
Final Round Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.
Play-Off Decider
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
