'Living a Nightmare': Relatives of Missing Teens Desperately Seek Answers After Alpine Fire
The relatives of teenagers missing after a deadly inferno at a establishment in a Swiss ski resort are enduring an painful period of uncertainty for answers and appealing for clues about their children publicly.
The inferno devastated the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the Swiss Alps of the Valais region, in the early hours of January 1st. Verified video show the ceiling igniting as beverages with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Authorities have warned that it could take an extended period to identify the fatalities of the tragedy, which killed 40 people and hurt another 119. Authorities noted on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been identified, with the process still underway to name the final individuals.
In the waiting period, loved ones have been taking to social media to appeal for any news about their friends who were in attendance that fateful night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The whereabouts of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are not yet determined, according to an appeal from his family.
The resident of a town near the city, told a local newspaper that she had gone back to the city to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in the capital, but did not locate him.
"I'm living a nightmare, a nightmare. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she stated.
She added that some of his peers had been found with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's indescribable; they endured hell."
The Italian foreign ministry has confirmed that six of its young people remain missing.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old sportsman, who hailed from Genoa but now living in the UAE.
The Italian Golf Federation has said that he is no longer with us, without directly referencing the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who carried with him dedication and authentic values."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An representative has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is not yet.
Further Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also unaccounted for. His mother explained that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and ended up at the bar.
"A companion said they ran away after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a specific moment he they were separated," she explained, adding he had been wearing a distinctive gold chain.
One of his teachers said, "He was known for his kindness and smile, coupled with great responsibility. He would frequently ask if help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Swiss and Greek nationality but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also at the bar on that night, according to reports.
Her sibling has posted an appeal on social media, saying the relatives has had "no information" regarding the 15-year-old or the three friends she was with, who are also reported missing.
Consular authorities from her country of origin say they are closely watching the case.
