Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

He commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and eagerly await following their progress".

The prominent academic, who once led Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

The newly public emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it understood his determination to depart.

"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the organization stated.

Political Context

This news follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on this week to endorse a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will subsequently proceed to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has stated he plans to sign the measure, after changing his stance on the issue following pushback from his base.

A group of financier-linked emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.

After the emails were shared with the general audience, he said he assumed "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to continue corresponding with the financier".

Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, announced that Summers was not affiliated with the group.

Summers became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive the company leader.
