Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 others got wounded in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the location and one more individual who fled following the incident was found not long after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The official thought the detonation had taken place on a level above the entrance and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
