‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from gurney to scoring with the Basque club
Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta featured in England, an young appearing for the youth squad against German opponents at Adams Park in September 2015, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in England, against the Black Cats weeks after, he netted. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, sure enough, he did it once more. As he revisited to the city to face United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, too. “In fact,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker admits, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the second half: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, the city, the morning session is ready to commence; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu airport and another flight to England, now to face Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. It has become a difficult season for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.
In the three years since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and debuting in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. As the child of the ex-La Real star his father and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that developed the coach, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a drop in category and a call back before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the top level but every phase you advance through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his first game and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it helps. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All the minor details: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he scored three times in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and should the time come they need someone where you play, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the previous season which, sometimes, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
